Africa-Press – Liberia. Former Bomi County Senator Sando Johnson has made a bold political declaration: he will not support the Unity Party (UP) in the 2029 general and presidential elections, signaling a possible shake-up in Liberia’s political landscape.

Johnson, who currently serves as Legislative Liaison Officer at the Senate, a position appointed by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, made the statement during a Spoon Talk show appearance in Monrovia.

“I have said I will not support the Unity Party in 2029,” Johnson declared. “Let me repeat, I will not. I will not support the Unity Party in 2029. Those who have ears have heard it. I’m sure the President has heard it. I’m sure his Vice President has heard it. I tell you, only for President Boakai, and I will not go beyond that.”

The former senator emphasized that his political support is limited strictly to President Boakai, making it clear that his allegiance to the ruling party ends with the president’s tenure.

When pressed on whether he might align with another movement in 2029, Johnson said he remains open to new alliances. “If I conclude with them and decide to support them, I will,” he stated.

Johnson’s remarks have since sparked debate among Liberians and political analysts. During a radio discussion, several commentators reflected on his shifting political loyalty over the years.

One political commentator remarked, “At a certain point, you were loyal to former President George Weah when money was flowing. Then you joined the CPP, went silent, later supported the UP, and now you’re distancing yourself again.” The commentator added that political loyalty in Liberia often seems transactional, raising questions about integrity and consistency among the country’s politicians.

Responding to his critics, Johnson defended his record, insisting his decisions are based on the interests of his people in Bomi County rather than personal or financial gain, saying, “I have to feed my people,” he said. “If they don’t protect my interests and the interests of Bomi, I have the right to decide where to stand.”

Johnson, a veteran political figure, has previously aligned with George Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) before supporting President Boakai and the Unity Party in 2023.

His latest pronouncement, “only for Boakai”, suggests another potential political realignment as Liberia begins to turn its attention toward the 2029 elections. Mr. Johnson served one term in the Liberian Senate from 2011 to 2020.
