National High School Sports Regional Championship Begins

Africa-Press – Liberia. According to the organizers, matches will be held across four venues: Voinjama Lofa County, Gbarnga Bong County, Greenville Sinoe County and Zwedru Grand Gedeh County.

The stage is set for one of Liberia’s biggest grassroots sporting spectacles as the 2025 National High School Kickball and Football Championship enters its Regional Phase on Wednesday, September 3.

According to the organizers, matches will be held across four venues: Voinjama Lofa County, Gbarnga Bong County, Greenville Sinoe County and Zwedru Grand Gedeh County.

High school champions representing all 15 counties will participate in the second phase of the nationwide tournament, which has grown into the country’s most competitive inter-school sporting event since its launch in 2017.

Schools Square Off Region by Region

In Voinjama, Lofa County, hosts Voinjama Multilateral (kickball) and Free Pentecostal Global Mission (football) will face stiff competition from Bopolu High of Gbarpolu, C.H. Dewey High of Bomi, and Sinje High of Grand Cape Mount.

Gbarnga, Bong County, will see action at the David Kuyon Sports Stadium, where teams from Bong, Nimba, Margibi, and Grand Bassa will be represented by their county champions, including Sumo Moye Memorial (kickball), William V.S. Tubman Gray High (football), and Bassa High (football).

In Sinoe County, the James E. Greene Sports Stadium will host Region 4 matches, with St. Paul Episcopal Parish High, P.G. Wolo High, Sasstown High, and Green Pastures High among the contenders.

Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, will stage Region 5, featuring Mike Tuleh Wilson A.G. Mission, J.S. Pratt High, and Tweh Jaiklay High in both football and kickball.

Montserrado County, a stand-alone region, has already completed its zonal phase. The qualifiers for the football competition are Reeves F. Charity Senior Memorial, Highway Christian Academy, Howard Academy, and G.W. Gibson High. In kickball, the teams that advanced are Amos T. Warner, St. Samuel, Howard Academy, and Nathan F. Reeves Charity. The Montserrado stage was not without controversy, as Sarah Doe High School was disqualified and handed a one-year ban after an investigation revealed the school had fielded six ineligible players. This decision allowed Howard Academy to re-enter the tournament.

Organizers Foot the Bill

National High School Sports, the organizers of the tournament, have confirmed that transportation, meals, and lodging for all participating teams will be fully covered.

“This championship is not just about sports; it’s about education, character, and opportunity,” the organizers said, emphasizing that the competition continues to be used as a platform to boost school enrollment nationwide.

Road to the National Championship

Winners of the Regional Championships will advance to the National Finals in Montserrado County later this month. The ultimate champions in both football and kickball will receive US$7,000, a large trophy, medals, and an international travel opportunity to Ghana or Nigeria. The runners-up will pocket US$5,000, while the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in each sport will receive US$1,000 and additional prizes from sponsors.

Launched in 2017, the championship now features over 150 high schools and has become a proving ground for young Liberian athletes.
