Africa-Press – Liberia. FLY Presidential Aspirant Samuel James Kpartor has raised huge concerned over the alleged conflict of interest demonstrated by Maryland County District #2 Representative Anthony F. Williams and certain members of the House Committee on Youth and Sports. Their actions regarding the ongoing leadership crisis within the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) are perceived as highly partisan and detrimental to their constitutional duties.
The controversy stems from Representative Williams authoring a communication to the House Plenary, which resulted in a summons for the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS). This intervention is viewed by critics as a direct attempt to interfere with the Ministry’s stated efforts to resolve the electoral dispute, not as an impartial exercise of legislative oversight.
FLY Presidential Aspirant Samuel James Kpartor alleges that Representative Williams and his associates have been “deeply involved” in the origins of the FLY electoral dispute, raising serious concerns that their official legislative actions are not impartial but instead serve predetermined political interests. This alleged bias, it is argued, fundamentally undermines the neutrality required for their three cardinal functions: Lawmaking, Representation, and Oversight.
The action of Representative Williams and his collaborators creates a clear perception of bias. This conduct fundamentally compromises their ability to fulfill their non-partisan legislative duty to the people of Liberia, prioritizing narrow political interests over the public trust,” stated a spokesperson for the concerned group.
Further complicating the matter, the House Committee on Youth and Sports, chaired by Rivercess County Electoral District #2 Representative Hon. Steve Tequah, recently issued instructions to halt the Minister of Youth and Sports’ interference in the FLY leadership process, pending his appearance before the Committee.
While the Committee emphasized that FLY, as a civil society organization, should operate independently of direct government control—a stance supported by the deputies’ appearance—critics note the potential for the Committee’s actions to be seen as biased given the originating communication from Representative Williams.
FLY Presidential Aspirant Samuel James Kpartor has reemphasized the call on the Committee to ensure its proceedings are transparent and non-partisan, maintaining strict adherence to the principles of fair oversight. Allowing alleged conflicts of interest to dictate legislative action sets a “dangerous precedent” that compromises the integrity of the 55th Legislature.
