Sen. Sogbe Launches Construction of First-Ever City Hall in Kanweaken, River Gee

Africa-Press – Liberia. Senator Johnathan Sogbe of River Gee County has broken ground for the construction of a modern City Hall in Kanweaken, the commercial hub of the county. The project, estimated at over $200,000, is the first of its kind in the city’s history.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, drew a wide array of attendees, including local government officials, traditional leaders, religious representatives, youth groups, and security personnel.

Senator Sogbe, addressing the gathering, emphasized the importance of the City Hall, stating that a central administrative facility is essential for any growing commercial city. He described the project as part of a broader development vision for River Gee.

“Having a City Hall for Kanweaken is not just necessary—it’s overdue,” Senator Sogbe said. “This project is part of our commitment to ensuring that River Gee County experiences meaningful development.”

He listed several other development initiatives under his leadership, including the completed Youth Center in Kelipo Kanweaken, a Town Hall in Chedebo Beletiken, multiple town hall projects underway in various communities, road renovations, and the construction of hand pumps to improve access to clean water.

However, Senator Sogbe noted that the Kanweaken City Hall holds symbolic value, as it reflects the administrative growth and urban progress of the county. The project has been awarded to Real Estate Builders, a local firm, and is expected to be completed within six months.

He called on local leaders and citizens to support the contractors and help ensure that the project stays on schedule. “Unity and cooperation are key to getting this done on time,” he urged.

City Mayor Joyce Chea expressed gratitude to Senator Sogbe, noting that previous city administrations had long struggled without a dedicated City Hall. She said the new building will ease the burden on city leadership and enable more effective governance.

“Since Kanweaken gained city status in the 1990s, we have operated without a formal office. This project will change that,” Mayor Chea said. “We are thankful and fully committed to its success.”
