Tennis Added to School Curriculum as Liberia Launches Grassroots Sports Initiative

Africa-Press – Liberia. Tennis is making its debut in Liberian schools through a grassroots initiative launched at Life International School System in Logan Town, Monrovia, marking a significant step in diversifying school sports programs.

Life International is the first school in Liberia to incorporate tennis into its physical education curriculum. The program, introduced by Coach Alfred Kandakai and funded by the PTI Foundation USA, aims to teach students the fundamentals of tennis—ranging from ball bouncing to racket handling—free of charge.

Coach Kandakai, who also serves as the Technical Director of the Liberia Tennis Association, expressed excitement about the children’s enthusiasm for the sport. “We are very happy that the kids are embracing this sport here in Monrovia,” he said at the official launch.

In a bid to spark interest, televised tennis highlights are being shown as part of the instruction. Kandakai emphasized that early exposure to the game is key to its growth, particularly as football dominates youth sports in Liberia.

“The goal is to build from the grassroots to advanced levels. It is important that kids at an early age start to play,” he noted.

According to Coach Kandakai, the program is already active in five schools across Montserrado County, with a goal of reaching over 10,000 children within two years.

“Using schools is the fastest way to grow the sport in the country. During PE classes, over 50 students can learn tennis at a time,” he explained. Kandakai also confirmed that PE instructors are being trained to support tennis instruction in the classroom.

Life International School System’s Head Administrator, Eunice T. Kota, praised the initiative and said the school is committed to incorporating tennis into its PE sessions. “We love the idea and will make it a priority,” she said, expressing hope that students will one day compete nationally.

Student Princess D. Gee welcomed the opportunity, calling tennis a life-changing international sport. “I’ve read how people benefit from tennis through scholarships. I encourage my friends to take this seriously,” she said.
