Africa-Press – Liberia. This ruling nullifies the election of Representative Richard N. Koon, reaffirming Koffa’s status as the legitimate Speaker.

The Supreme Court of Liberia has settled the contentious leadership dispute in the House of Representatives by declaring the removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa by the self-styled “Majority Bloc” as unconstitutional. This ruling nullifies the election of Representative Richard N. Koon, reaffirming Koffa’s status as the legitimate Speaker.

In a statement signaling support for the ruling, Senator Abraham Darius Dillon declared. “The Supreme Court ruling is clear. J Fonati Koffa is the Speaker,” urging unity and a return to order in the legislative branch.

The decision stands as a strong assertion of the rule of law and a warning against unconstitutional maneuvers in Liberia’s legislature.

However, the ruling has sparked criticism from opposition figures. Mo Ali, a vocal critic, dismissed the decision, saying, “When the Supreme Court hands down a ruling that is not enforceable, the court has undermined its own authority. Hon. Richard Koon remains the Speaker.”

Ali questioned the Court’s consistency, noting, “If anything done by the plenary without their ‘SC speaker’ is illegal, why is the Supreme Court operating on a budget passed by the Koon-led House?”

Adding to the controversy, Mines and Energy Minister Wilmot Paye expressed frustration over the judiciary’s handling of the case. In a social media post, Paye remarked, “The Supreme Court of Liberia, by its majority opinion today, becomes the first supreme court in the world to render two separate opinions on the same matter.”

He added that the decision “has made the quagmire in the Legislature even more complicated, if not impossible, for resolution any time soon.”
