US Delegation Marks 169th Anniversary of Mount Galilee

Africa-Press – Liberia. The visit forms part of celebrations marking the 169th anniversary of Mount Galilee Baptist Church, which was founded by Baptist missionary Lott Carey—a member of the Richmond First Baptist Church—who was sent to Liberia nearly 169 years ago to evangelize.

A ten-member delegation from the Richmond First Baptist Church in Virginia, United States, is in Liberia as guests of the Mount Galilee Baptist Church in Careyburg, Montserrado County.

The visit forms part of celebrations marking the 169th anniversary of Mount Galilee Baptist Church, which was founded by Baptist missionary Lott Carey—a member of the Richmond First Baptist Church—who was sent to Liberia nearly 169 years ago to evangelize.

Speaking during a welcoming program, Rev. Dr. James “Jim” Somerville, Pastor of the Richmond First Baptist Church, said that Lott Carey and his fellow missionaries laid a strong foundation upon which the present generation must continue to build.

“It is now time for this generation to carry the torch that was passed down to them,” Rev. Somerville emphasized.

Earlier, Rev. Jimmy Diggs, Pastor of Mount Galilee Baptist Church, expressed joy over the visit, describing it as a historic and spiritually significant moment for the congregation and the people of Careyburg.

“This visit is very important to us because the man after whom this city is named—Lott Carey—came from the Richmond First Baptist Church,” Rev. Diggs noted.

Also speaking, Deacon Board Chairperson Mydea White-Simmons highlighted that Mount Galilee Baptist Church has produced several members who have served in prominent positions in government, business, and society over the years.

Representing the government, Careyburg City Mayor Edwin Urey thanked the visiting delegation for their gesture and expressed optimism that the visit would help strengthen ties between the City of Richmond, Virginia, and Careyburg, Liberia.
