Africa-Press – Liberia. Fans of the Paynesville FC left the Samuel K Doe Sports Complex Sunday with tears in their eyes following the demolition of their team by Watanga FC in the Liberia Football Association Super Cup.
The 2024-2025 Liberia football season finally commenced with the “Solder Boys”, Watanga FC, proving to be a serious contender for the league titles as demonstrated by Sunday’s performance.
Liberian champions Watanga FC proved their supremacy over Paynesville with a comfortable 4-0 win to lift the first trophy of the new league season.
Paynesville went into the match hoping to improve on the performance from last season, but things didn’t go their way in the first match of the new season.
Despite winning three games in the CAF Confederation Cup recently that did not scare Watanga, who put up a good fight to kick-start the season in style.
The fans were kept close to their seats in the opening minutes of the match, and both teams had a fair share of the ball following a classical display from both sides.
Paynesville could have taken the lead but Mark Paye’s shot travelled over the crossbar when he was put through by Lawrence Kumeh.
Watanga FC’s highest goal scorer from last season, Emmanuel Sieh, scored a hat-trick after a disappointing WAFU U-20 tournament in Liberia.Young Sieh got the match opener from the penalty spot when Paynesville FC Captain Ayetay Yangbe used his hand to prevent a goal, but he was shown a straight red card and penalty given, which Sieh converted by sending the keeper the wrong way.
Down by a man and a goal, things got worse for the Citizens minutes later after the opening goal when Chris Dennis headed in his own goal.
The Citizens of Paynesville fought to get a consolation before the break but were denied by the youthful defense of Watanga.
The two teams created chances in the first half, but it was Watanga who got two goals in the first half.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Paynesville FC returned stronger after the break to get a goal but couldn’t.
Sieh scored two goals after the restart to complete his hat-trick to end the match 4-0 to Watanga.
Before the match between Paynesville FC and Watanga, the Women’s Super-Cup title was won by Shaita Angels FC.
Shaita Angels came from a goal down to draw with Determine Girls.
The girls of both teams displayed classical football that the fans were impressed with as the game was decided from the penalty spot.
Shaita Angels won 4-3 to clinch the 2024 Liberia Football Association Women’s Super-Cup title.
It was a sweet revenge for Shaita Angels who lost the 2023 Super Cup narrowly to Determine Girls with 2-1.
