Africa-Press – Liberia. Part of the 1,000 Cape Verdeans participating in the World Youth Day are already in Portugal for the Catholic event, which runs from 1 to 6 August. This is Cape Verde’s largest ever participation in this event. Young people from various islands in the country participate.
Participants start to arrive from all the islands, from flights from the city of Praia and Mindelo, to Lisbon, with trips taking place until the 30th of July, and as they arrive, they will be in pre-journey, in Fátima, which takes place from the 26th to the 31st of July.
For these days, which take place under the motto “Maria got up and left in a hurry”, this evening a group arrived from Santiago, including priests, and another group from São Vicente and Santo Antão, accompanied by the bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo, Dom Ildo Strong.
Among the Cape Verdean participants are young people, priests, sisters, interested students from the Miraflores School, the Holy Spirit Congregation, the Diocese of Mindelo, the Diocese of Santiago, the Salesian Congregation, in addition to the presence of the Bishop of Mindelo, Dom Ildo Fortes.
Meeting with Pope Francis
During WYD, various activities will be carried out, such as prayer vigils, youth festivals and daily masses, with the highlight reserved for the 6th, with a mass presided over by Pope Francis.
Still in Lisbon, the Cape Verdean delegation plans to hold, among other activities, a large meeting, after the journey, with young people from the diaspora about the perspective of the diaspora for the Church and for the country.
According to information advanced to Inforpress, in June, by the deacon and diocesan assistant for the youth of the Diocese of Santiago, José Manuel Vaz, Cape Verde has a total cost of around 105,533,000 escudos.
Expected 1.5 million people
According to the organization, the World Youth Day should bring together between one million and 1.5 million people in Lisbon, with Pope Francis arriving on August 2nd and staying in the Portuguese capital until August 6th.
The main initiatives of WYD Lisbon 2023 take place in Lisbon, in Parque Eduardo VII, in the area of Belém and in Parque Tejo (to the north of Parque das Nações and on land in the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures).
In addition to the main ceremonies with Pope Francis, such as the Way of the Cross (04), Vigil (05), Final Mass (06), dozens of events are planned, such as concerts, conferences, vocational fairs, reflections, in multiple spaces in the capital.
