Africa-Press – Malawi. Ministry of Unity in collaboration with United nations embarked on official Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) Accelerator Fund Project on Border Security and Conflict Prevention in Mangochi.

Minister of Civic Education, Timothy Mtambo said this at Masuku Community Ground in Mangochi on Friday, September 2, 2022. Mtambo said the area in question is one of the areas that border with neighboring Mozambique where extreme violence is taking place

‘It’s necessary to build both human and institutional capacity in these areas as one way of ensuring prevention and management of conflicts before they escalate into physical violence,” observes Mtambo.

He said the project will be implemented by the UN agencies in partnership with the Ministry of National Unity to strengthen capacities in peace-building and conflict management.

Mtambo therefore commended Embassies of Iceland and Ireland who have funded the SDG Accelerator Fund Project in order to further help the Ministry and Government as a whole promote peace in Malawi.

He said the first output of the project is to strengthen the National Peace Architecture which includes support to the Ministry of National Unity to establish and strengthen the capacity of the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission as well as District Peace and Unity Committees (DPUCs) in Mangochi and Mulanje Districts.

He said the project also recognizes that community members are key actors, especially women and the youth in order to build sustainable peace in the country. Mtambo however disclosed that the project will train youth as active monitors and influencers of peace and stability.
