Malawi’s Flames CHAN dreams fade completely as they draw again Mozambique

Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi National Football Team the Flames, on Sunday, September 4, 2022 bowed out of CHAN in Maputo after playing a goalless draw against the Black Mambas of Mozambique.

Flames was looking forward to break the jinx by qualifying to the 2022 Algeria Chan finals but their dreams were dealt a blow after Mozambique held them to a nil nil draw at Estadio Do Zimpeto.

Mario Mariana Marinica’s side needed nothing but a win or a one all draw which could see them going into extra time and penalties to qualify for to the finals after they equalled power 1-1 at home Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe days ago.

However, as it was the case at home Flames missed a lot of chances through Schumacher Kuwali, Patrick Mwaungulu among others.

Malawi played deep and tried to hit the host Mozambique through counter attacks which seemed to work out but their center attackers lacked killer punches to do the needful.

Mozambique has therefore qualified to the finals on away goals rule.

Malawi started Blue Eagles FC goalie Brighton Munthali, Paul Ndhovu, Stanley Sanudi, Gomezgani Chirwa and Miracle Gabeya in defence while Yamikani Chester, Micium Mhone,Chimwemwe Idana and Chikoti Chirwa started in the midfield with Chiukepo Msowoya and Schumacher Kuwali as center attackers.

Mozambique dominated the ball possession and created more scoring chances than Malawi who survived several dangers especially in the first half. Marinica made several changes to make sure he gets a vital goal, Chiukepo Msowoya paved way for Patrick Mwaungulu, Schumacher Kuwali was replaced by Stain Davie, Lloyd Njaliwa came on for Micium Mhone, Gaddie Chirwa, Nickson Mwase replaced Yamikani Chester and Chimwemwe Idana.

The changes changed tempo of the game but still the team couldn’t find that precious goal hence it was the host who got almost two clear chances which was wasted by Muchanga.

After the game Malawi Coach Mario Marinica was disheartened for failing to qualify to the 2022 Chan finals, saying his side created chances as it was the case at home but failed to take them.

“The substitutions I made really worked, you see Mwaungulu had clear chance same as that was found by Schumacher Kuwali in the first half but failed to convert. We failed to take our chances at home and allowed them to score as they deserved the qualification.

“Malawians have to learn supporting their team, look at the Mozambicans they were few at BNS but made more vocals which gave their team morale”, Marinica said.
