Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Police Football team which is partaking in this year’s Southern Africa Region Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (SARPCCO) games are soaring high in Tanzania.

The cops have reached the finals of the tournament following their 2-1 victory on Tuesday over Zimbabwe Police in a game played at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Mike Nyondo scored in the 25th minute of the first half. At half time Malawi Police narrowly led Zimbabwe with that lone goal.

Zimbabwe Police however leveled the matters at 51st minute in the second half.The game was slowly thought to end in stalemate as at 76th minute it was still at par.

Gilbert Chirwa extended the Malawi Police Service lead at 79th minute with a beautiful goal,and his goal sent the Malawi Eagles to the finals of the tournament which is their second since the games started in 2003.

Coach Ken Mponda has hailed his charges for the confidence and highly spirited performance they have showcased at the tournament. Mponda said,he anticipate a tough final against the host Tanzania on Thursday, but was upbeat that the team will do better and win the match in the presence of Tanzania Police Force.

“I am happy for my charges,reaching the final stage of this tournament is another record we have set as Malawi Police Service. With the endurance and hardworking spirit I have seen in the team,I am surely confident that we will be champions on Thursday”,

“I anticipate a tough much considering that we are playing against the host but that won’t be a vivid excuse, I will have a full squad on Thursday, Schumacher Kuwali and Dennis Nandolo who missed Zimbabwe game for red cards will be available. It is coming home”, Mponda said.

Malawi Police Service last won the football championship (GOLD) in 2015 under head Coach Derklek Msakakuona. Malawi Police Netball team has already won a Gold medal, Athletics, Volleyball teams and women’s football team were all eliminated in the group stages.

This year’s games involve more than 1500 sportsmen from the Police Forces of Malawi, South Africa, Angola,Comoros Island,Botswana,DR Congo, e-Swatini,Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia,Zimbabwe and the host Tanzania.

The Police Officers are competing in Football both for men and women,Netball, Volleyball both for men and women,darts,Tennis,chess for both men and women and Athletics.

SARPCCO was established in 1999 as an entity and games started in 2003 with an aim of creating perfect opportunity for officers to come together, cultivate regional friendship and trust, leading to a stronger network of law enforcement officers which enhances cooperation in the fight against transnational organized crime among others.

The games are being held at Benjamin Mkapa, Uhuru, Gwambina Temeke Stadia and Magufuli Hostels Stadium, and are anticipated to end on September 17, 2022.
