Africa-Press – Malawi. BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-All is set for the Malawi government to start implementation works for the 350 Megawatts Mpatamanga peaking Hydropower project.
Presiding the signing of the relationship agreement for project at Capital Subird Hotel in Lilongwe on Tuesday September 6, 2022, Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola described the ceremony as the memorable one in the country’s power history.
He said the signing of the relationship agreement is further taken as a huge milestone in the development of the Mpatamanga Hydropower Project as it concludes the procurement process of a private investor,the Scatec and EDF Consortium, which started in January 2020 after the launch of the Request for Proposals.
According to the Energy Minister, the 350MW Mpatamanga Peaking Hydropower Project will not only double the installed capacity of hydropower in country, but also improve the power supply security, provide opportunities for increased renewable energy generation capacity in the country and contribute to the controlling of the flow of the Shire River downstream the power plant.
“We need 1000 Megawatts by 2025, and I urge all stakeholders and development partners to join hands not only for this flagship project of Mpatamanga but for many other projects for the betterment of the citizenry,” Matola said. He said the Malawi Government is indebted to its partners in achieving the milestone which is a major step in the development of the Project.
Sofar, International Finance Corporation (IFC), Scatec ASA’s Hydropower Joint Venture, and Électricité de France (EDF) are companies that have signed the relationship agreement with Malawi goverment to help implementing the project.
