Africa-Press – Malawi. The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Presidential hopeful and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, has advised Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government to fix the economy and let it serve the people of Malawi from where the DPP left it.

Kabambe says DPP came to stabilize the economy, prices were running north while salaries remained stuck south, the goal was stability by anchoring the economy for it to start growing saying the path to growth has no shortcuts advising Malawians not to be fooled.

He says from 2019, the goal was to start reaping from the stability, people who don’t have any idea of the economy came with lies saying they promised shortcuts to prosperity without telling people how to get to the promise.

Writing on his face book page, Dr. Kabambe says when the Tonse Alliance came into power they realized that it is not as simple as it looked, they could not even understand the formula on Net International Reserves that DPP was cooking figures, they went out with stories and persecution.

“The next time someone promises you an economic miracle out of the blues, do not listen to them,” reads Kabambe’s writings on the wall.

Kabambe’s writing is following reports which have been published in various social media platforms that the IMF Board has resolved that Malawi will not pay any penalty to the IMF for misreporting forex figures between 2018 and 2019.

When the International Monetary Fund (IMF) discovered that there was misreporting on forex reserves, Malawi had already received US$58.7 million which is about MK60.2 billion forcing the government of Malawi to pay back the funds.

Meanwhile, social media commentator Bashir Al Bashir has written a food for thought on his face book page that there were no misreporting of figures by the DPP led government to the IMF.

Bashir argues that it was the MCP led government that could not understand the reporting format and data by the DPP and they thought it was misreporting.

Bashir claims that the case between the MCP led government and former Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha and former RBM Governor Kabambe who were arrested by police and appeared in court for the offence of cooking up figures to the IMF, renders baseless.

“Fellow Malawians, I am afraid that we may compensate Mwanamvekha and Kabambe in billions for being misled by the MCP led government as good leaders,” reads Bashir Al Bashir’s writings on the wall.

Chakwera is unable to fix ailing economy two years in power being characterised by high cost of living, fuel, drugs and forex shortages. Instead Chakwera opts for petty local and international trips which drain hard-earned Malawians taxes
