Africa-Press – Malawi. The former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has reinstated Christopher Mzomera Ngwira as the regional governor for Northern Region following his recent release from jail.
In a letter signed by the party’s Administrative Secretary, Francis Mphepo, on December 11, 2022, the party says it did not disqualify Ngwira due to his conviction and is still satisfied with his performance during the time he worked as its Regional Governor.
“I am pleased to inform you that the Party has re-instated you as Regional Governor for the Democratic Progressive Party in the Northern Region with immediate effect,” reads the letter in part. The letter adds that DPP arrived at the decision to reinstall Ngwira considering his exceptional performance in the past when he held the position.
Following his arrest by the Anti-Corruption Bureau in 2018 over diverting funds from the Local Development Fund when he was serving as Member of Parliament for Mzimba Hora Constituency, Ackim Mwanza has been acting as Regional Governor until yesterday when the position was thrown back to its original holder. Ngwira was scheduled to be released next but was released this year by Mzuzu High Court following his appeal of the conviction and sentence.
