Africa-Press – Malawi. The battle for the 2025 TNM Super League title took a new twist Sunday after FCB Nyasa Big Bullets earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over Mafco FC at Champion Stadium in Mponela, Dowa District.

It was a vital win for Bullets as they reduced the gap between them and leaders Mighty Wanderers to one point, with one match to wind up the first round.

The win means Bullets have 33 points from 14 matches, one point behind Wanderers, who dropped points following a 1-1 stalemate with Chitipa United at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

The results have set up an exciting finale of the first-round fixtures in the battle for top spot.

At this stage, it is too early to call. There will be twists and turns in the second round.

But, surely, the title race is slowly taking shape.

Bullets will wrap up their first-round campaign against Karonga United at Kamuzu Stadium whereas Wanderers will face Civil Service United at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

The win over Mafco was Bullets’ second consecutive away victory after beating struggling Mzuzu City Hammers 2-0 at Rumphi Stadium in Rumphi District on Thursday.

On the other hand, Wanderers, who had been dubbed favourites to finish the first round on top, failed to collect maximum points in two consecutive matches after they also drew one-all with Moyale Barracks at Rumphi Stadium last week.

Currently, Wanderers are the only unbeaten side in the league.

At Champion Stadium yesterday, Chikumbutso Salima made the difference when he headed in a Yamikani Mologeni cross in the 77th minute.

After the goal, Bullets players went to the Mafco goal wave after wave as they were looking for a second goal.

Mafco goalkeeper Christopher Mikuwa pulled a brilliant save when he denied substitute Babatunde Adepoju a goal-scoring opportunity.

Relief was the prevalent emotion on the part of Bullets.

Bullets Coach Peter Mponda applauded his charges for a job well done.

“Credit should go to the players. They never gave up and kept on pushing. I am really proud of them,” Mponda said.

On his part, Mafco Coach Stereo Gondwe rued missed chances.

“We had some opportunities, especially in the first half, but did not utilise them. But, overall, the performance was very good,” Gondwe said.

Elsewhere, Civil Service United thrashed Hammers 4-0 at Civo Stadium.

Dastan Banda scored a brace whereas Frank Chizuze and John Dambuleni scored a goal each.

Civil climbed to position seven with 22 points from 14 matches whereas Hammers are stuck on position 15 with eight points from the same number of matches.

In another match played yesterday, Karonga claimed a 1-0 victory over Moyale Barracks at Rumphi Stadium courtesy of Rajab Juma’s goal.

Karonga are sixth on the log table with 23 points whereas Moyale are on position 14 with 15 points from 14 matches.
