Zomba Diocese needs K43m to support 33 seminarians

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Catholic Diocese of Zomba has announced that it requires approximately K43 million to support 33 seminarians from the Diocese of Zomba who are studying at seminaries such as Kasina, Kachebere, and St. Peter’s Major Seminary.

This was said by Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba during a Holy Mass at Zomba Cathedral that was organized with the aim of raising funds to support the seminarians.

Chaima said that in the past the Catholic Church was supported by white people from abroad, but they have now stopped providing assistance.

He therefore encouraged Christians to take part in supporting seminarians with their own resources in matters of education, adding that each diocese is expected to support its own seminarians.

He praised Catholics in the Diocese for the help they provide in supporting priests, seminarians, and Sisters who serve them.

Bishop Chaima advised all seminarians from the Catholic Diocese of Zomba to work hard in their studies so that there will be a larger number of priests in the Diocese.

“In the past the Catholic Church in this country was supported by white people, but they have now stopped, so let us encourage ourselves to support the Diocese,” he said.

Speaking after Holy Mass, the representative of the chairperson of the organizing committee, Andrew Usi, thanked all Christians who took part in the event.

Usi said that as the academic year is about to begin, the Zomba Diocese needs to pay at least 21.5 million kwacha, and he therefore encouraged Christians to give generously.

Fr. Egnacio Bokosi, who represented the chairperson of the Diocesan Priests, urged all seminarians that even if they face challenges, they should remain focused on their studies so that they too may become priests.
