Africa-Press – Malawi. A learner is feared dead while three others have been injured at Wonder Care Private Nursery School in Nancholi, Blantyre, after a school block they were in collapsed.
The incident followed rains that fell on Tuesday. Eye witness Shera Namacha said they heard women shouting for help. “We quickly went to the scene to help out and managed to pull out all the learners who had been trapped before the police arrived,” Namacha said.
Owner of the school, Mayamiko Nzeru, who was not available when The Daily Times arrived at the scene after she had gone to the hospital with the victims, said, initially, they suspected that six learners had been injured.
“After re-assessing everything, it was found that four learners were in the block and, unfortunately, we have lost one,” Nzeru said. She said it was a normal day for them as a school and that the incident happened during lunch time.
“We were rehabilitating the school, carrying out renovations in another part. We were yet to finish the renovations and recent rains have led to the collapse of the block,” Nzeru said.
When contacted for a comment, Blantyre Police Station spokesperson Peter Mchiza only confirmed that six learners had been injured following the collapse of the school block on them.
“For now, the information we have is that six learners have been injured and are receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital,” Mchiza said. The school opened last year in February with an enrolment of 28.
