Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has asked the public to hold their breaths regarding his action on the report by the commission of inquiry on the arrest of the Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Martha Chizuma.
Several organisations have been calling on Chakwera to take immediate action following the submission of the report by the commission to him on January 3, 2023.
In an interview yesterday when asked as to when Chakwera would take action on the inquiry report, Presidential Secretary Anthony Kasunda said Chakwera would act on the report in due course.
“His Excellency has already publicly committed to pronounce his decisions and directions on the report, and so all queries about the President’s determinations will be settled when he speaks,” Kasunda said.
On Friday the Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) asked Chakwera to act on the report ‘immediately’ to avoid compromising the fight against corruption in the country.
HRCC chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba said that Chakwera needs to act on the recommendations even if it means removing Chizuma and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steven Kayuni.
“We demand that the President end this saga by taking decisive actions without fear or favour or repercussions that may befall us as a nation given the massive interest the matter generated, locally and internationally.
“Let justice be felt and let the President act as mandated by the report findings; no one is above the law,” Mkwezalamba said.
He urged Chakwera to show that he was different from his predecessors who he said did not act on commissions of inquiry findings. Among others, the report recommends the reorganisation of the leadership at the ACB and DPP.
Chizuma was arrested on December 6, 2022 at her house and taken to Namitete police where she was charged with making use of speech capable of prejudicing a person who is party to judicial proceedings.
The arrest followed a complaint filed to police by DPP Kayuni. Chakwera instituted a commission of inquiry to look into the arrest. The commission was headed by retired Supreme Court judge Edward Twea. Chakwera assured Malawians that he would take action on the inquiry.
