DPP, MCP in blame over Saturday, as more commentators speak out against political violence

Africa-Press – Malawi. Leading political parties Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are locked in blame game over who is behind the political violence that erupted at Mbowe in Lilongwe which resulted in injuring some people and destruction of vehicles.

The opposition DPP has come out clear accusing the ruling MCP to be behind while the MCP has maintained its innocence by distancing itself from the fracas.

The jazz has been worse to the extent where MCP leader of business in parliament Richard Chimwendo Banda, who is also the Minister of Local Government, has demanded retraction and apology from a certain DPP member who accused him of being the artchitect and sponsor of the fracas.

Meanwhile several commentators have spoken against the political storm of violence gathering on the horizons of the country.

A consortium of 16 civil society organizations-CSOs under the banner National Advocacy Platform-NAP has described the growing cases of political violence and intimidation in the country as a dangerous trend.

The CSOs say the systematic planning and execution of these attacks target to stiffle opposition voices and freedom of association and expression.

In a statement, NAP Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe condemns the barbaric acts and has since asked the police to promptly investigative the matter and bring to book those behind the attacks. Police say they are already on the ground.

“The president should unequivocally condemn these attacks and ensure swift accountability through law enforcement, safeguarding democracy and citizen rights.

“Such actions not only endanger lives but also erode the foundation of democracy and the rule of law in Malawi,” reads the statement.
