Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi is carving a new niche in tourism by embracing emerging sports and adventure activities that attract both international and local visitors. As the country recovers from the impact of COVID-19, sporting events, outdoor pursuits, and cultural festivals are breathing new life into the travel sector.

Tourism is one of the key pillars in Malawi’s long-term Vision 2063. Under the Tourism Investment Master Plan (2022–2042), the government is backing more than 100 tourism projects, many involving sport and outdoor recreation. These include:

With sustained investment and smart promotion, sports-based tourism could become a cornerstone of Malawi’s economic and cultural appeal on the global stage. Here are some of the main areas driving Malawi’s sports and activities sector:

Rugby is regaining momentum in Malawi, with the national union rejoining Rugby Africa and attracting new sponsors. South Africa’s Springboks have shown that African countries can lead the way in rugby. Malawi is now exploring regional tournaments to boost visibility and tourism.

Adventure tourism is booming in Malawi’s highlands. The Mulanje Porters Race and trail events in Zomba and Viphya showcase the mountain’s trekking potential. Events like the Blantyre Marathon and Luwawa MTB Race draw endurance athletes and eco-tourists.

Lake Malawi is emerging as a hotspot for water-based adventure. Resorts across Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, and Likoma Island offer activities like kite-surfing and kayaking, while events like the Sailing Marathon and scuba courses are enhancing their appeal to adventure tourists.

Though still early days, the tourism benefits are visible:

With support from the government’s Tourism Investment Master Plan and growing private interest, sports tourism is poised to become a pillar of Malawi’s tourism strategy. These emerging activities not only attract visitors, but also offer income and development opportunities for local communities across the country.
