Global inform Commissioners accredits Malawi rights agency

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) is now accredited human rights body by the International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC),a global forum which connects member Information Commissioners responsible for the protection and promotion of access to information laws in order to improve transparency & accountability to the benefit of everyone.

In a statements, MHRC Secretary Director Habiba Osman describes the accreditation which took place on September 1,2022 as a great milestone to the commission and international recognition of its role in overseeing the implementation of the Access to Information Act (ATIA).

“It is in the interest of commission to share best practices and learn from peer institutions at the international level on how to make right to access to information enjoyed by everyone. Therefore, the Commission would like to express its gratitude to the ICIC Executive committee for accrediting the commission.

“Further, the Commission would like to acknowledge the enormous effort by Commissioner Baldwin Chiyamwaka for initiating the process and Mr. Chance Kalolokesya, Head of the Access to Information Unit at the Commission for his role in the application process,” says Osman in a statement.

ICIC’s mission is to share knowledge and best practices, to buid capacity, to help identify what is needed for global progress, and to act as collective voice in international fora to improve peope’s right to public information and their ability to hold to duty bearers accountable. The International conference currently has 73 accredited members in Europe, Africa, Asia, America and Oceania.
