Africa-Press – Malawi. Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have set up an Airtel Top 8 Cup clash against holders Nyasa Big Bullets following their 2-0 deserved win over Blue Eagles at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre Sunday. Veteran striker Chiukepo Msowoya and substitute Yamikani Chester scored a goal each to inspire the Nomads to victory.

This is the second time for Wanderers to reach the final, having made it to the last two during the inaugural year in 2017, when they lost to two-time winners Silver Strikers 10-9 on post-match penalties.

This is an opportunity for Wanderers to end their trophy-less run, having last won a cup in 2018 when they clinched the defunct Fisd Challenge Cup. It will also be the fourth meeting of the two Blantyre giants this season, having met three times, with Bullets winning two matches while the other ended in a 3-3 stalemate.

Bullets first defeated Wanderers 2-1 in the 2022 season league opening match before thrashing their rivals 4-0 in the FDH Bank Cup. The second-round league game saw Wanderers coming from two goals down to force a 3-3 draw. Wanderers Coach Mark Harrison said even though his charges were yet to concede in the competition, they will not get complacent.

“We are building. It is a process. We don’t want to get carried away. It is a cup final and it is against Bullets. You know they [Bullets] have been winning for the last two years. It will not be an easy game by all means. We have got to go with a good focus. We know what to do and if we plan properly we give ourselves an opportunity to win

“Let us enjoy tonight, then we can plan for next week,” Harrison said. Msowoya gave Wanderers the lead in the 16th minute with a simple tap in from a Misheck Botomani telling pass.

Eagles struggled for the better part of the game and when Chester doubled Wanderers’ lead in the 55th minute, the game was beyond the reach of the policemen. Eagles Coach Eliya Kananji conceded defeat, saying they did not create chances.

“We were not tight at the back and we gave away the goals. We have to go back to the drawing board to strategise on how to return better next season,” he said.

Eagles won the cup in 2018 when they defeated Bullets 1-0. On the other hand, Bullets won the cup last year, after beating Silver 5-3 on post-match penalties.
