Africa-Press – Malawi. The Embassy of Iceland has pumped K504 million into the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to strengthen human rights-based interventions with a focus on sex-based discrimination in Malawi.
Speaking at the official handover of a vehicle that comes as part of the project, Iceland Minister of Foreign Affairs Thordís Kolbrún Reykjörd Gylfadóttir said the project will run for three years. She said they understand the financial challenges faced by MHRC, hence the support.
“Issues of human rights are to be handled with agency, which is why we thought of helping MHRC. We are aware that the institution has numerous challenges and we believe the little we have donated will go a long way in sorting some of the challenges they face,” Gylfadóttir said.
MHRC Chairperson Scader Louis said the commission will put the funds to good use. “As you are aware, our budget was reduced, such that we are failing to conduct investigations into human rights abuses. The funds will, therefore, enable us to reach every corner of Malawi,” Louis said.
Recently, MHRC said it has been forced to shelve some of its crucial investigations due to lack of funds. In the 2022-23 national budget, the Treasury allocated K1.3 billion to MHRC.
