Africa-Press – Malawi. A group of young children at Sadzi, in Malawi’s old capital, Zomba, recently experienced a moment that could shape their futures. Dressed in uniforms representing various professions, they spent the day imagining life as doctors, nurses, teachers, and police officers. The smiles on their faces reflected more than just play — they were beginning to picture the paths they might one day walk.
Sellina Bomani, a strong advocate for early childhood education, highlighted how introducing career awareness at the nursery level can help build a foundation for lifelong academic motivation.
Bomani, who is also the Executive Director of Tikondane Positive Living Support Organisation (TIPOLISO), believes that when children are exposed to different professions early on, they begin to understand the value of education and are more likely to stay focused as they grow. This, she highlighted, was the motivation behind TILIPOSO career’s day.
Speaking at Star Nursery School under TIPOLISO at Sadzi, during the Career Day celebration, Bomani emphasised the importance of encouraging learners on their academic journey.
According to Bomani, starting school at nursery level develops knowledge and critical thinking skills from a tender age. She urged parents to send their children to nursery schools, as they prepare them for primary school and beyond.
“Career awareness is important because it helps guide nursery school learners towards their future careers, motivating them to work hard to achieve their goals,” she said.
Parents and professionals joined the children in these moments of discovery. One parent, Trudeth Matemba, shared how the event inspired her children and strengthened her own resolve to support them in reaching their goals. Health worker Cecilia Golden Kasunje also spoke to the importance of showing children what’s possible when they stay committed to learning.
Cecilia Golden Kasunje, a nurse at Zomba Central Hospital, added that career day gives learners a clear picture of what they want to be in the future after completing their studies. She also encouraged parents and guardians to support their children in their chosen careers.
On her part, Matemba, a parent who attended the event, expressed gratitude to TIPOLISO for organising the Career Day celebration. She noted that the event had sparked her children’s interest in their desired careers and pledged to encourage her children to work hard and provide them with necessary support to achieve their dreams.
