Africa-Press – Malawi. Former Malawi National Football Team captain Joseph Kamwendo has asked for more competitions in rural areas if the country is to grow its pool of players for national team selection.
Kamwendo was speaking at Luchenza ground on Sunday when Thyolo East Member of Parliament Masauko White was launching a K2 million bonanza. The former Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Orlando Pirates star said lack of competitions in rural areas is hampering the exposure of skilled players.
“Government and other partners should establish cups in villages so that skilled players are exposed and taken to Super League teams. From there, it will be easy for them to stand a chance for national team selection
“We seem not to be doing much in developing both netball and football locally because we don’t have as many competitions around. So I am appealing to all stakeholders in the game to change their way of doing things. We need well stablished competitions that will help in developing our game,” he said.
White said he came up with the bonanza to help keep youth of his area busy. “I have a vision of seeing players from my area featuring in the national team. I want to keep them busy with sports so that it benefits them in future. As such, this launch is a way of getting things off the ground,” he said.
The bonanza is expected to have 16 teams from different parts of the constituency. In the launch match, Gunda Select beat Luchenza Select 5-4 on post-match penalties after a barren stalemate in regulation time.
