Africa-Press – Malawi. National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust Programme Officer Nathan Sakala has urged people in Ighembe Ward to come out in large numbers and vote during the March 17 Local Government by-election.
Sakala made the call on Saturday at Ngalamu Primary School ground during a football bonanza between Kashata Rangers FC and Chimalabanthu FC.
“As NICE Trust, we organized this bonanza to mobilize citizens in Ighembe Ward to come out in large numbers and cast their votes on March 17,” he said.
Sakala also reminded voters to be mindful of the voting time on polling day, saying polling stations will open at 6:00 am and close at 4:00 pm.
“Delaying to go and vote may result in some eligible voters failing to cast their votes for their preferred candidates,” he added.
Speaking during the event, Karonga Police Officer-in-Charge and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Morgan Dzonzi, urged youths to refrain from practices that may incite violence, saying such acts are against the law.
“You are leaders of today. Do not allow political party leaders to use you to destroy other people’s property. We will not tolerate such practices and offenders will face the law,” he said.
Dzonzi also warned youths against blocking roads to prevent other political parties from accessing certain areas, saying such acts will not be tolerated.
In his remarks, Group Village Head Chiwobola applauded NICE Trust and the Malawi Police Service for organizing the bonanza in his area, saying the message of peace had been effectively delivered as evidenced by the large turnout.
He also emphasized the importance of voting wisely by choosing leaders who will prioritize development in the area.
