Africa-PressMalawi. President Lazarus Chakwera Thursday asked African leaders to take a bold step and ensure improved food systems and food security for their people. In his virtual address ahead of the United Nations (UN) Food Systems Summit Dialogue for African leaders, Chakwera said there was a need to institute industrial policies, promote private investment and job growth in local non-farm sectors.

“Let us resolve to work collaboratively with African universities and other actors in and outside Africa to develop the requisite human capital for our food systems,” he said.

This year’s summit seeks to generate significant action and measurable progress towards the attainment of Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Chakwera said the summit would help Malawi to contribute to the attainment of SDGs as well as the country’s efforts to domesticate the African Union Agenda 2063.

“Malawi is fully committed to achieving the goals of the summit. My country’s interest in this is a matter of urgency because Malawi has high population growth, which is increasing the pressure on its natural resources. Recurring droughts continuously afflict Malawi’s agriculture sector, thereby threatening the livelihoods of smallholder farmers,” he said. This year’s summit is set for July 25 to 28 as part of the Decade of Action to achieve Sustainable Development initiative.
