Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has called on businesses to embrace innovation, sustainability, and quality assurance to remain competitive in both local and regional markets.
Speaking in Blantyre on Monday during a Product Certification Award Ceremony, MBS Director General Bernard Thole emphasized the need for Malawian companies to align their product standards and systems with international demands.
“In an era where the world is changing rapidly — with global supply chains, digital transformation, and heightened consumer expectations — the traditional ways of defining and delivering quality are no longer enough,” Thole said.
He highlighted that Malawi as a signatory of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), presents opportunities for businesses to prepare by embedding a culture of quality and aligning with international best practices.
“Quality drives export readiness, consumer protection, and economic development. It is the foundation upon which Malawi can achieve Vision 2063,” he added.
MBS Director of Quality Assurance Services Gloria Chaonamwene Mereka, urged local manufacturers to invest in quality assurance systems to meet evolving consumer expectations and market demands.
“In today’s dynamic and interconnected global market, businesses that embed quality into their DNA do not just survive—they thrive,” she said.
At the event, the Bureau awarded 351 certifications to both newly certified and renewing companies.
These included 241 new entrants and 110 renewals, bringing the total number of certified businesses in Malawi to 2,005.
Among the certified companies were Meleka Products, Rab Processors Limited, Ekhaya Foods, and Food Lovers by Amaryllis Hotel.
Meleka Products Director Rev. Clement Nkhoma, described the certification as a major milestone for his company, which produces a range of household and industrial cleaning products including pine gel, toilet cleaner, tile cleaner, swimming pool tonic, car wash cleaner, and dishwashing liquid.
