Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has disclosed that this year’s Malawi Sport Awards will take into consideration exploits of athletes, teams and officials attained in the last two-and-a-half years.
MNCS Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said the decision was reached following a two-year break of the awards due to the Covid pandemic.
“We have to accommodate the achievements that happened between 2020 and now. It means this year’s awards will reflect on success attained in 2020, 2021 and 2022 as at this moment.
“We certainly need to award outstanding athletes and teams to motivate others to aim high because that is one of the major factors that can help develop our sport,” he said.
Ntulumbwa said this year’s awards will also attract new category of female and male veterans. “We need veterans because they are a source of inspiration and guidance,” he said. Ntulumbwa said the committees which were set to identify and vet winners were almost through with their work.
“We only facilitate the process but we rely on various committees to nominate and scrutinise outstanding athletes, teams and officials depending on their achievements before announcing the winners,” he said. Sports Council has jointly organised the awards with the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The Gala Night awards will take place at Bingu International Convention Centre on Friday at the end of the sports indaba, which will attract all sports associations affiliated to the council and the corporate world with an aim of finding solutions to develop sports. The sports indaba will start on Thursday.
