Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has praised the Muslim World League (MWL) for its support to Malawi, particularly during the country’s moments of crisis.

Chakwera spoke in Lilongwe Monday during the 25th anniversary celebrations of MWL programmes in Malawi.

MWL is an international non-governmental organisation headquartered in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, with members from various Islamic countries and sects.

It aims to present what it calls the true message of Islam and to foster friendship among people.

In Malawi, MWL is dedicated to enhancing the welfare and development of the population through humanitarian aid, educational programmes and interfaith dialogue.

Chakwera described the organisation as a steadfast and genuine friend of Malawi.

He noted that when he declared a state of disaster in 23 of Malawi’s 28 districts in March this year, after dry spells induced by El Nino scorched thousands of hectares of crops, secretary general of MWL, Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Issa, was among the first to respond.

Chakwera said Issa insisted on visiting Malawi personally to assess the situation on the ground and ensure that MWL’s support for Malawi’s efforts to address the acute food shortage continued unabated.

“I believe that Malawians should know that, thanks to the support of the Muslim World League, a network of villages in Lilongwe is currently being connected to clean water.

“I believe that Malawians should know that, with the help of the Muslim World League, we distributed 300 metric tonnes of maize flour to people with disabilities during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Chakwera said.

He went on to list several forms of support from MWL, including aid to orphans who are receiving education through the league’s K8.5 billion Orphan Allowances Programme, which was launched last year.

For his part, Issa said his organisation would continue to support various efforts in Malawi.

He added that Malawi holds a special place in the heart of MWL and assured that no children in the country should feel orphaned, as “they have a father and mother in President Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera”.

During the celebrations, several Malawian youths shared how they have benefited from MWL’s programmes in areas such as education and relief assistance.

In Malawi, MWL provides essential support to communities affected by natural disasters, conflicts and economic hardships.

It distributes food, provides clean water and medical supplies and delivers other resources to vulnerable populations.

MWL is also active in the education sector, establishing and supporting schools, vocational training centres and educational initiatives to enhance literacy and skills development.

In the health sector, MWL implements programmes aimed at improving maternal and child health, combating communicable diseases and promoting overall well-being.
