Africa-Press – Malawi. MHANGO—It would be nice for the QueensThe sport of netball is expected to feature at 2032 Olympic Games in Australia which would be a landmark achievement for the game.
Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) President Jappie Mhango hinted that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was considering giving netball and other sport codes provisional licences to make their debut at the Games for thorough assessment.
“The probability that netball would feature at the games is high as the IOC is working on issuing a provisional licence to the sport to debut in Australia.
“However, the only concern is Malawi National Netball Team’s form which is declining hence falling to position eight on the rankings. It would be nice for the Queens to be part of history when the sport makes its Olympic debut,” Mhango said.
Currently, World Netball is working tirelessly to lobby for netball’s inclusion as the games and IOC is expected to confirm its stand next year.
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) General Secretary Yamikani Khungwa- Kauma said it was an exciting time for the sport and its future.
“It is simply fantastic news and a great opportunity for cementing the growth of the game. It is huge to have netball included in the sports.
“Since this inclusion is temporary for 2032, there is more that our associations, Africa Netball, World Netball as well as Moc must do to raise the profile of the game and ensure consistent inclusion going forward,” she said.
Khungwa-Kauma said Queens’ fall should not be of a concern as Nam and sponsors Nico Group have a plan to help the Queens discover their form.
