Africa-Press – Malawi. The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (Agra) is to implement a $10.8 million Regain Programme aimed at combating post-harvest losses in Malawi currently hovering around 30 percent.

The programme will be implemented with support from Green Climate Fund (GCF).

Speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday during an inception meeting of the Regain Programme, Agra Country Director Eluphy Nyirenda said the meeting marks the beginning of a transformative journey aimed at addressing one of the most pressing climatic challenges faced by the agricultural sector, particularly farmers.

“This project is a beacon of hope for farmers, producers, and the entire food supply chain. It symbolises a commitment to enhancing food security, improving livelihoods, and fostering sustainable agricultural practices,” Nyirenda said.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Owen Chomanika hailed Agra for the programme.

According to Chomanika, post-harvest losses have presented a headache to authorities in recent years.

He said tackling post-harvest losses could be key in ensuring food security in the country.

“Already our productivity is low because of climate change issues and when we have a programme of this nature which is aimed at reducing food loss; it is something that makes us happy,” Chomanika said.

Regain aims to strengthen smallholder farmers’ climate resilience and adaptive capacity by promoting the wide-scale adoption of food loss reduction solutions.

This involves engaging both the demand and supply sides, with a strong emphasis on market creation and enhancement and active participation from the private sector.
