Africa-Press – Malawi. He anchored his head between his two trembling legs, occasionally looking up to wipe his eyes. His life was a mess and hope for a new life was quickly evaporating into the thin air.
Is there a second chance in life for people who have made wrong decisions and entangled their lives with tragic consequences? What hope is there for those people who are condemned by the public and sentenced to a life of shame?
There are many suicide cases that arise from the extinction of hope. When hope is lost, life becomes meaningless. Langston Hughes once said: “Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.”
There is hope for the hopeless. There is redemption for the dead dream. It is possible, rise up from the mud and reclaim a new life through Christ Jesus. He specialises in remoulding lives and giving second chances to the hopeless.
In Luke 4 verse 18-19 Jesus says: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”
This passage summarises the purpose of Jesus’s life on earth – to give hope to the hopeless and a new beginning to those who have fallen on the dark side of life.
There are people who are battered by their past sins, grilled for the atrocities of their family members, scolded for mistakes of their parents and denied an opportunity of a new beginning in life.
There are people who are rotting in our prisons and wish they could go back in time to reverse their bad lifestyle. There are patients in our hospitals who are dying from terminal illnesses that could have been avoided had they lived their life differently. They twitch on the bed in despondency.
They wish they could reverse their decisions. There are young girls who walk around our societies with children they wish they never had. They gave in to temptation to unscrupulous men who left them in the cold.
There are students who got themselves into bad company at school and ended up failing in their exams. Some got thrown out of college because of bad grades. They look back at their past and wish they could do better.
The list is endless. There are men and women who cheated on their spouses and ended up being kicked out of the marriage bed. They now fully understand their wrong decisions and wish they were faithful.
There are stigmatised by the public and condemned. Few people take them seriously anymore. No one wants to trust them into a serious relationship. They are thrown out of church and ostracised by family members.
The legendary C.S. Lewis once wrote about hope in this manner: “Hope is one of the theological virtues. This means that a continual looking forward to the eternal world is not (as some modern people think) a form of escapism or wishful thinking but one of the things a Christian is meant to do. It does not mean that we are to leave the present world as it is. If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next.”
Mistakes should be treated as teachable moments. Unfortunately, many people don’t bounce back after falling down. They lay on the floor for history to record them as casualties of life.
It is possible to surrender your life to Jesus Christ through faith. It is possible to start afresh in life. Yes, it is possible to believe for a better tomorrow through Christ Jesus! It doesn’t matter how grave your sins were. Jesus can turn
