Africa-Press – Malawi. TNM Super League leading goal scorers Babatunde Adepoju and Mohamed Sulumba have downplayed fighting for this season’s golden boot award. Babatunde and Sulumba are engaged in a two-horse race for the award as they have banged in 16 and 15 goals, respectively, with the season nearing the end.

The two had a chance to extend their goal count during matches played over the weekend but fired blanks as their teams Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers lost by 1-0 margins.

Wanderers lost to Blue Eagles at Nankhaka in Lilongwe on Saturday while Mafco handed Bullets their first defeat of the season at Dedza Stadium the following day. Sulumba said he was not under pressure to catch up with Babatunde and overtake him.

“I am not under pressure at all. I know people expected me to score during the Blue Eagles match but the fact that I failed to do so does not put me under pressure. I play to win and help my team collect points. We fail and lose as a team.

“We did all we could to win the match but goals didn’t come by. The best way forward is for us to continue working hard in training and see what happens in the remaining games. My ultimate goal is not to finish on top with many goals. No. I just want to help the team do better,” he said.

Babatunde also downplayed his failure to score. “I am not chasing anything apart from helping my team defend the league title. Of course, strikers play to score goals but sometimes things do not work out the way you want.

“This happens in football and is quite normal. But we have a couple of games at home before winding up the league. So we will see what happens during those games. It is just a matter of waiting,” he said.

Bullets lead the league’s log table with 61 points from 26 games. The People’s Team is the highest scorer in the league with 58 goals. Wanderers are fourth on the log table with 50 points from 26 games, having scored 48 goals.

Silver Strikers forward Chawanangwa Kaonga is third on the top goal scorers’ chart with 13 goals while Kamuzu Barracks (KB) attacker Zeliat Nkhoma lies fourth after netting 10 goals. Stain Davie of Silver and KB’s Mphatso Phillimon are tied on fifth position with nine goals each.
