Africa-Press – Malawi. National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma) has indicated that it is receiving petroleum products from all its three suppliers, a development that would culminate in stability in supply.
This is coming at a time the supply of petrol has stabilised in major cities while diesel supply remains intermittent.
Nocma spokesperson Raymond Likambale said on Friday that 1. 6 million litres of diesel arrived at its Matindi depot in Blantyre by rail while trucks were being loaded both in Tanzania and Mozambique.
“All our suppliers are loading and trucks are coming in from all routes. Currently, over 70 tankers are loading at Beira, with some already arriving in the country. At Mwanza, 23 tankers have been cleared and have been loaded with over 700,000 litres of petroleum products.
“From Tanzania, a total of 26 trucks carrying over a million litres of petroleum products are already in the country, with more volumes expected each passing day. Nocma is working around the clock to make sure it brings in more volumes to the country,” Likambale said.
He said other players were also bringing in volumes of fuel.
Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority Chief Executive Officer Henry Kachaje told journalists recently that a number of strategies had been employed to contain the problem of fuel scarcity.
“We have deployed several measures such as increasing the number of wagons ferrying fuel into the country from 30 to 58. This will provide us with a supply lasting nearly two days.
“We are also introducing fuel rationing to ensure that everyone can access the commodity in the meantime,” Kachaje said.
