Africa-Press – Malawi. Mighty Mukuru Wanderers continued to make a statement of intent as regards their ambitions in the 2023 season with the signing of Malawi National Football Team defence stalwart Lawrence Chaziya Thursday.
Also unveiled at Lali Lubani Road Thursday was up-and-coming goalkeeper Dalitso Khungwa. Chaziya has joined as a free agent on a three-year deal whereas Khungwa signed from Mighty Wakawaka Tigers on a four-year contract.
With the signing of the two stars, Wanderers have beefed their squad with six players after getting on board Gaddie Chirwa from Blue Eagles, Karonga United’s Mphatso Kamanga, Christopher Kumwembe of Civil Service United and Tigers’ Emmanuel Nyirenda.
Wanderers are also linked with the return of former midfielder Francisco Madinga, who is a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Dira Gori of Georgia.
Speaking after unveiling Chaziya and Khungwa, Wanderers Board Secretary Chancy Gondwe said they expect to make one or two more big signings before the season starts.
“We are not done yet. We expect to bring on board one big fish. Our target is to build a strong squad that other teams will be scared to play against,” Gondwe said.
He said arrangements are being made to offload 10 players who will make way for the new signings. “We are in the process of releasing 10 players so that they should go to other teams. We want to have a manageable squad of 25 players,” Gondwe said.
Chaziya said playing for Wanderers would be a dream-come-true. ’’I am ready for the new challenge. Wanderers is a big team and I will be honoured to be part of it,’’ Chaziya said in the company of his manager Jimmy Linje.
Chaziya became a free agent following the expiry of his 10-month contract with Jordanian side Hussein FC. The Nomads have also inserted a K16 million buyout clause for Chaziya if he signs for an international club within the first year of the contract.
The former Civil Service United defender, who was one of Malawi National Football Team’s revelations during last year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon, said he gained valuable experience in Jordan.
Khungwa said he was ready to wear Wanderers colours. “I have always dreamt of playing for a big team like Wanderers. If given the chance to play, I will work hard to help the team win,” Khungwa said.
Wanderers Coach Mark Harrison said he was happy with the club’s progress on the transfer market. The Nomads have already released striker Ephraim Kondowe and defenders Bongani Kaipa and Francis Mlimbika. The club recently announced plans to participate in this year’s Confederation Cup after winning the Airtel Top 8 Cup.
