Africa-Press – Malawi. Patriots, a Malawian non-for-profit, voluntary charitable organisation, has announced the rollout of the second wave of medical equipment and supplies distribution exercise.

It says the equipment is valued at approximately K29 billion (or $16.2 million).

The organisation’s chairperson Kamuzu Chibambo says, in a statement, that the donation is part of a partnership with Project Cure and Islamic Relief USA (Irusa).

Project Cure is responsible for mobilising the medical equipment while Irusa is supporting the shipment of containers from the United States of America to Malawi.

“The current batch consists of 27 containers, each 40 feet in length, valued at nearly K1.5 billion, and is part of a broader commitment to deliver 100 such containers nationwide, from Nsanje to Chitipa,” Chibambo says.

According to Chibambo, the distribution will support public, Christian Health Association of Malawi (Cham), and health facilities under the Islamic Health Association of Malawi (IHAM), as well as health training institutions.

He says the second wave will be rolled out in batches, with six government hospitals set to receive equipment in the first batch. These are Chitipa, Karonga, Salima, Mchinji, Mangochi, and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.

He added that the delivery to QECH is expected any day from May 27, 2025, with the remaining containers scheduled to arrive in June this year.

“Thereafter, the initiative will tackle six other public health facilities. This milestone will significantly boost Malawi’s healthcare system, increasing access to quality services in underserved areas,” Chibambo said.

Patriots is, however, urging local leaders, hospital management teams and community members to prepare for and support the integration of the resources into the healthcare service delivery system.

“We are also calling upon the public to demand accountability and transparency in the deployment and use of the donated equipment and supplies,” he said.

Chibambo has lauded strategic partners, including Smiling Surgeons Inc. USA, Malawian diaspora in the US, Project Cure, Islamic Relief USA, Malawi Embassy staff in Washington, Rotary and Lions Clubs of Malawi, Cham and the Government of Malawi, particularly the ministries of Health, Local Government, and the Malawi Revenue Authority.

Since 2024, Patriots has donated medical equipment and supplies to several hospitals, including Zomba Central Hospital, Likuni Mission Hospital, Bwaila Hospital, Nsanje District Hospital and Mzuzu Central Hospital.

The organisation’s model emphasizes needs-based donations, tailoring each shipment to the specific clinical gaps of recipient hospitals.
