Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawian coach Gerald Phiri Senior is enjoying a season of his life at Eswatini Premier League side Nsingizini Hotspurs after winning the inaugural MoMo Cup.
Nsingizini are third on the log table with 18 points from nine matches and are just a point behind joint leaders Young Buffaloes and Green Mamba. This has compelled one of Eswatini’s leading online sports publications new.oberver.org.sz to give the team a high fliers’ tag.
“Dlamini has been instrumental in Nsingizini’s good start to life in the MTN Premier League, with the team sitting at third on the log standings and just one point behind first-placed Young Buffaloes.
“He further helped the Shiselweni-based side win the inaugural MoMo Cup alongside Malawian mentor Gerald Phiri,” part of the publication’s report reads. In a message posted on its Facebook page early this week, Nsingizini stated that they had made real progress on the pitch under Phiri.
“On the field, we have made real progress under coach Gerald Phiri and, as we enter the holiday period, we sit third in the league,” part of the message reads.
After winning MoMo Cup in November, Nsingizini hailed Phiri with another Facebook post which read: “Head coach Gerald Phiri. Four games in all competitions. Four wins. No loss. No draw. The gaffer has landed.”
Football analyst George Kaudza Masina said the results indicate that Phiri is a good coach. “We are a country with good coaches and Gerald Phiri is one of them. All we need is to give them time to do what they want to. We also need to give them all the support like we do with foreign coaches.
“So I am not surprised that Gerald has delivered a cup and is in the top three of Eswatini’s top league within the few months he has been at Nsingizini. I believe he is working in a professional setup that will help him deliver more,” Kaudza Masina said.
Phiri joined Nsingizini after getting sacked at Blue Eagles despite saving the Area 30 side from relegation on the last day of the 2021 season. The former Malawi National Football Team star was also coach at giants Nyasa Big Bullets, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Mighty Tigers besides having also served as Flames assistant coach.
