Africa-Press – Malawi. Icon Properties plc, owner of Chichiri Shopping Centre, has announced the exit of one of its key tenants, Shoprite, at its Chichiri Shopping Mall. Shoprite closed its operations at the mall on Sunday, which marks the conclusion of a remarkable 24-year retail partnership at one of Malawi’s most iconic and historic shopping destinations.
Shoprite opened at Chichiri in 2001, becoming one of the centre’s first and longest-serving tenants. Icon Properties Chief Executive Officer Washington Chimuzu says in a statement that as Chichiri Shopping Centre celebrates 25 years of existence this year, Shoprite remains an integral part of its story.
“This moment reflects the natural evolution of the retail landscape, but it also allows us to celebrate a partnership that stood the test of time. Shoprite has been more than a tenant; they were a pillar in the growth story of Chichiri Shopping Centre and the shopping experience in Malawi,” Chimuzu says. He says plans are underway to welcome a new anchor tenant into the space previously occupied by Shoprite.
He says Icon Properties remains committed to strengthening the centre’s tenant mix, enhancing customer experience and maintaining its position as one of Malawi’s most vibrant and trusted retail destinations. The mall is host to high level international brands such as Game Stores, KFC and key local brands such as Kips, key banks, eatery and clothing stores.
Icon Properties continued to improve the mall’s infrastructure by adding the KFC Drive-Thru, the construction of the police unit and, most recently, the installation of an automated parking system.
