Africa-Press – Malawi. Football Association of Malawi (Fam) can breathe a sigh of relief after Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) disbursed K1 billion for the Malawi National Football Team, the Flames assignments.

This comes just two days after the Flames were eliminated from the 2025 Hollywoodbets Cosafa Cup in the group stage following two defeats and a draw in three matches.

KAMATA—Government is committedSports Council Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata confirmed the development yesterday. “We have given Fam K1 billion as part of their 2025/2026 government funding towards national teams’ engagement. Government allocated K1.5 billion. It is important to state that this is clear evidence of the government’s commitment towards development of football in the country,” Kamata said.

The development could be a relief for the association as it owes Flames players game bonuses for some matches in the Nations of African Championship (Chan) qualifiers.

Malawi won three matches in four matches in Chan qualifiers.

Kamata said the increase in funding was an indication that government is committed to supporting the Flames.

“Last year’s funding was about K400 million, which means the government has given more than 200 percent increase in funding. Obviously, with such an increase Malawians should expect good performance from our football national teams,” Kamata said.

The government has for a long time been under heavy criticism for delaying to release funds for the national team activities.

National team is the responsibility of the government.

The Flames nearly pulled out of this year’s tournament due to lack of funds.

But they flew out of the country to South Africa just a day before their first match against Lesotho which they lost 1-0 at Toyota Stadium.

Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka asked for more time before commenting on the matter.

Fam and Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) usually gets a huge chunk of allocations from government.

Nam has been allocated K1 billion for the national netball teams activities.

PasuwaMeanwhile, Flames coach Kalisto Pasuwa has said his focus was on building a team for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying campaign.

“As coaches, we are professional enough. We are building a team that will qualify for Afcon 2027 so in the process of building a team, you, at times, go into risk mode, where you need to see each and every player playing in the national team. And also, one area which I thought we should be able to know, when we are building a team, we look also at the age.

“Say, yes, we know outside this, we might need instant results of saying, maybe, if you take an experienced player, we can get a result,” Pasuwa said.

The Flames lost 1-0 to Angola in their last group stage match after a goal-less stalemate against Namibia.
