Africa-Press – Malawi. Local pool genius Grievin ‘Ginte’ Stanford underlined his growing reputation when he finished second during the Timba-Xo International Pool Open Carnival in Kenya.
For earning a silver medal, Stanford has received about K10.7 million in prize money.
Stanford said he was excited with his exploits even though he did not grab a gold medal.
“I was looking for a gold medal but some technical mistakes I made on the table cost me my goal. I hope I will do better next time.
“Now I will start working on the mistakes that cost me the game because this was the second time for me to make such mistakes. I hope to do better next time. I will not settle for silver medals even though I know that it is an encouraging step,” Stanford said.
The tournament attracted 192 players drawn from Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda.
During the tournament, Stanford beat six opponents but lost to Escha Chimbwanda of Zimbabwe 8-6 in the final.
On Saturday, which was the opening day, the Malawian thrashed Rasheeda Mutesi of Uganda 9-1 and Pasio Ganda of Kenya 9-0.
The following day, Ginte, as Stanford is well known, defeated Hazard Lukomwa (Uganda) 9-8, Kelvin Kandu (Zambia) 9-8, Joseph Kasozi (Uganda) 9-3 and Issaya Paulo (Tanzania) 9-2.
Stanford’s manager and sponsor Rodrick Mindress applauded his player for outstanding performances.
“Overall, Ginte played very well and is now rated as one of the best [players] in Africa. It is not surprising that the organisers were thrilled by his performance and said they believe the best is yet to come for him. His unique touch and focus are very impressive,” he said.
Last month, Stanford won a silver medal during the Queens International Singles Pool Championship in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
