Africa-Press – Malawi. May 30, 2025 1 minute read Addis Abeba– The Tigray Interim Administration has requested an explanation from the federal government after trucks transporting goods to the region were halted at checkpoints in the Afar and Amhara regions without explanation, Tigray Television reported.
In a letter addressed to Kassahun Gofe, Minister of Trade and Regional Integration, the region’s Trade and Documentation Agency stated that it had “learned from various sources” that trucks transporting goods to Tigray via the Afar route have been “prohibited from going to Tigray” at the Serdo checkpoint since May 26, 2025.
The agency said it is seeking “an explanation as to why they were prohibited” and urged the ministry to “take appropriate measures” to resolve the issue.
Tigray Television reported that both “light and heavy trucks” transporting goods from various parts of Ethiopia and Djibouti have been stranded at three locations across the Afar and Amhara regions.
The station noted that trucks heading to Mekelle “through the Afar route” had been stopped at a location called Serdo Meda, and that “no solution” had been provided to drivers or companies at the time of reporting.
The broadcaster added that the vehicles “have documentation” confirming they are operating legally, but the reason for the ban has not been disclosed.
Tigray Television also reported that the situation has created concern among business actors in the region
Drivers interviewed by the BBC similarly reported that they were stopped on Saturday, May 24, 2025. One driver was quoted as saying, “we have been stopped… being told we cannot pass,” and when asked for a reason, they were told it was “by order from above.”
In addition to the Afar route, the BBC also reported that trucks using the road to Mekelle via Weldia in the Amhara region had likewise been halted.
