Africa-Press – Malawi. Two psychiatric patients have been separated from their peers at Zomba Mental Hospital, on suspicion that they had a hand in the deaths of three other patients, who died due to strangulation between 25-27 April, this year.
The hospital is reported to have lost three patients during the said days. ZMH Spokesperson, Harry Kawiya, has confirmed the development, adding their investigations narrowed down the two patients.
“We suspect they we strangulated. We suspect they did not die a natural death. We reported the matter to police to identify possible suspects. We are still waiting to hear from police,” he said.
Eastern Region Spokesperson, Joseph Sauka, also confirmed the development but was quick to point out that the final report has not been deliver to the region.
“We are still investigating the matter and we will come up with the final report after the investigations,” he said.
This is happening at a time the referral psychiatric facility is rocked with a staff shortage, as one psychiatrics officer attends to 378 in-patients.
