Africa-Press – Malawi. Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito has clarified that recent changes to Vice President Jane Ansah’s security detail were routine, following officer rotations in December, and that new officers have been proposed to return.

The issue was raised in Parliament by Dedza Kasina MP Joshua Malango, who expressed concern over the Vice President’s safety amid reports of abductions and firearms circulation near the borders.

“Reports indicate that the Vice President’s security has been reduced, yet serious security challenges remain, including illegal firearms,” Malango said, urging the Ministry to provide clarity.

Lilongwe Nyanja MP Steve Malondera backed the concern, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the Vice President’s protection for both her and her constituency.

Responding, Minister Mukhito acknowledged security risks along Malawi’s borders and the prevalence of illegal firearms.

He called on communities to support police in preventing crime and smuggling. On the question of her security, Mukhito explained that officers assigned to the Vice President were rotated in December as part of normal postings.

He added that the Office of the Vice President has since proposed names to the Inspector General to be reinstated to her detail.

“These changes are standard procedure,” Mukhito said. “Whenever the government changes, security officers in key offices, including the President and Vice President, are rotated. The Vice President’s protection remains intact, with proposed officers ready to return.”

He reassured Parliament and the public that the Vice President remains under proper security, highlighting the importance of cooperation between citizens and police to maintain national safety.
