Africa-Press – Malawi. Mighty Mukuru Wanderers President Thom Mpinganjira has presented an early Chrismas gift to Nomads players after disclosing that they will share K17 million prize money for winning the 2022 Airtel Top 8 Cup.
Mpinganjira disclosed this at his residence in Nyambadwe Township, Blantyre, yesterday when the team presented the cup to him on their way from Lilongwe where they dethroned rivals Nyasa Big Bullets 5-3 on post-match penalties.
“All the prize money should be shared among the players for a job well done. If there is a shortfall I might top up,” he said. Mpinganjira dedicated the cup to the team’s supporters for enduring a three-year trophy drought and he urged them to be disciplined.
“I am so happy especially after what we have gone through and our meeting at the club house on Wednesday. And I, in turn, dedicate it to our supporters who have suffered for years but stuck to the club. This is their reward for being loyal to Wanderers Football Club,” he said.
Wanderers Captain Alfred Manyozo Jnr said the players worked hard to impress Mpinganjira and their sponsors Mukuru. “We had to do the talking on the pitch. We all worked hard and we are happy that we delivered what we were asked,” he said.
Wanderers Board Secretary Chancy Gondwe appealed for support from both supporters and directors. “Our victory in the Airtel Top 8 Cup shows that the team is heading in the right direction. The players responded positively by winning the cup following our meeting at the club house few days ago.
“However, we need to be united and support the team. Therefore, all supporters and directors should support the team,” he said.
Saturday’s match ended in a goalless draw in regulation time but Wanderers players Stanley Sanudi, Francis Mkonda, Miracle Gabeya, Peter Cholopi and Vincent Nyangulu scored all their spot kicks while Bullets converted through Hassan Kajoke, Yamikani Fodya and Babatunde Adepoju.
Bullets defender Kesten Simbi blasted his penalty over the bar, gifting Wanderers the advantage. Wanderers last won a cup in 2018 when they lifted the Fisd Challenge Cup.
