Africa-Press – Malawi. Member of Parliament for Mzimba North, Yeremiah Chihana, is today expected to appear in court to answer charges pertaining to abuse of office.

Tuesday, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) agents arrested the parliamentarian over abuse of public office and other charges.

Chihana’s lawyer Wapona Kitta confirmed that Chihana was arrested in Blantyre for being suspected to have abused his office in 2022.

“He is being accused of pressuring a contractor in his area to revise the contract sum from about K27 million to about K100 million. So, they claim he abused his office along those lines,” Kitta said.

He added that Chihana was expected to be taken to a Mzuzu court, where he would answer the charges today.

ACB acting Director General Hilary Chilomba also confirmed the development.

A warrant of arrest that the Mzuzu Resident Magistrate Court issued indicated that Chihana committed the alleged offence of misuse of public office, contravening Section 25B (1) of the corrupt practices Act; failure to declare interest, contravening Section 25D(2) of the Corrupt Practices Act; and Money Laundering, contravening Section 42(2) of the financial Crimes Act.

Chihana was also arrested in 2015 over tax invasion charges.
