Mauritius: Minister Jagutpal inaugurates Fertility Clinic at SSR National Hospital

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Ministry of Health and Welfare now provides two new services at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) National Hospital, namely a Fertility Clinic and an Epidural Service for women in labour.

As such, the Minister of Health and Welfare, Dr. Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, today inaugurated the first public Fertility Clinic in Pamplemousses during an official ceremony. The Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Mr. Sharvanand Ramkaun, and other VIPs were also present at the ceremony.

In his speech, Minister Jagutpal stressed that as Mauritius has an aging population, it is necessary to provide all facilities to couples who wish to conceive as the country’s fertility rate is quite low compared to other countries.

Therefore, he stressed, the Fertility Clinic will have an important role to play. Dr. Jagutpal indicated that the Fertility Clinic will provide a holistic approach to those couples facing difficulties in conceiving based on evaluation, diagnosis and treatment modalities.

He noted that existing advanced reproductive techniques, such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, will be offered to eligible couples.

The Minister recalled that several factors such as non-communicable diseases and alcohol, among others, can have a negative impact on the fertility of men and women.

He also highlighted that his Ministry has enabled a unit to allow the registration of patients in a subfertility database so that each patient can benefit from a set of diagnoses and an action plan proposal according to her needs.

In addition, Dr. Jagutpal underlined that his Ministry has launched an Epidural Service for women in normal labor at the National SSR Hospital. At a later stage, he stressed, this service will be extended to the other Regional Hospitals as soon as the necessary facilities are available and the personnel have been trained.

These services are operational from March 8, 2022 at the SSRN Hospital, which coincides with the commemoration of International Women’s Day, she added.

Before concluding, the Minister referred to the series of services that have recently been launched and are being offered in hospitals despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also encouraged mothers-to-be to take advantage of the services available at the National SSR Hospital. For its part, PPS Ramkaun noted that the Fertility Clinic project, which was long overdue, will greatly contribute to couples facing difficulties in conceiving.

He also commended all the medical staff for their contribution in the difficult times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and encouraged them to continue to do their best in their line of work.
