Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Memorandum of Agreement was signed (MoA) between the Polytechnics Mauritius Limited (PML) and the Private Clinics Association (PCA), to enhance training of students studying Nursing and Allied Health as well as other fields of interest in private clinics, yesterday, during an official ceremony organised by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, in Port Louis.
The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, the Chairman of Private Clinics Association, Dr Dawood Oaris, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Polytechnics Mauritius, Mr Yamal Matabudul, and other personalities were present at the ceremony.
Through this MoA, the staff of PML will get the opportunity to undergo externship programmes in the 17 different private clinics under the aegis of the PCA and students will be able to complete their specialised modules and get placements in the five regional hospitals of the island.
This MoA also further avenues of cooperation in the interest of both parties and sets out terms of understanding between PML and the PCA that can be developed in the interest of PML students not only in the Nursing and Allied Health field but also in other fields of interest to have their internship and employment in private clinics around the island.
In a statement after the ceremony, Dr Jagutpal highlighted that his Ministry is striving to make provision for universal, accessible and quality health services with emphasis on customer satisfaction.
Health care, he underlined, must be the concern of each and every one so that the service in the private and the public sector is improved for the wellbeing of the population.
“Recently, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the private clinics so that surgeries and medical treatments can be performed in private clinics itself instead of sending patients abroad,” the Minister pointed out. This initiative, he observed, will slowly yield positive results.
Furthermore, Dr Jagutpal underlined that this MoA sets out the framework for in-service employees of private clinics to follow short courses or certificate, diploma or advanced and specialist diploma programmes offered by Polytechnics Mauritius.
“The Ministry has also agreed that the training of nurses from the private clinics be done in collaboration with Polytechnics Mauritius, so that the private sector does not have to recruit people from abroad to deliver healthcare services in their institution,” he said.
The Health Minister announced that his Ministry will soon sign another agreement with the University of Bordeaux where doctors working in private clinics will also have the opportunity to specialise in their fields.
These initiatives, Dr Jagutpal stressed, bear testimony to the commitment of the Ministry of Health and Wellness as regards global quality healthcare, not only in the public sector but in private clinics as well so that healthcare services continue to improve in Mauritius.
