Africa-Press – Mauritius. The centenarian celebration of Mrs Kalaotee Naiko, born on 28 December 1925, was held on 28 December 2025 in Chemin Grenier, in the presence of the Member of the National Assembly, Mr Shridhur Jugurnauth, the Chairperson of the District Council of Savanne, Mr Narainsamy Seeneevassen, and members of her family.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity.

As part of the tribute the Ministry presented Mrs Naiko with a cheque of Rs 26,203, a bouquet, a centenarian medal, a certificate and a cookware set. She also received a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund, along with gifts from the Senior Citizens Council. Mauritius Telecom contributed by offering her a Special Telephone Service.

Mrs Naiko, the only child of her parents, studied up to Standard III. She was married to Mr Balaram Locano Naiko and worked as a labourer at the Union St Aubin Sugar Estate until the age of 65. The couple had six children.

The centenarian has 17 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Being a non-vegetarian, she enjoys traditional Mauritian dishes, notably ‘bouillon brede mouroung’ and fish curry. She likes to watch Hindi serials on television.

Mrs Naiko attributes her longevity to hard work, good hygiene and the devoted care of her family.
